• Mitochondrial function in spirlin muscle was tested at 20°C and CTmax at 34°C. • At CTmax, fluxes (OXPHOS and LEAK) were higher, but efficiency (ATP/O) was lower. • This study underlines the role of muscle mitochondria in thermal tolerance. • Muscle mitochondria dysfunction at high temperatures may impair fish locomotion.
