Abstract

Background: In the United States and around the globe, preterm delivery is a leading cause of infant illness and mortality. Aim and objectives: To examine the accuracy of transvaginal (TVS) and transabdominal (TAS) ultrasonography in assessing the lower uterine sphincter (LUS) thickness during a preterm pregnancy in women who have had a prior cesarean surgery, and to compare these results with the actual intraoperative LUS thickness. Patients and methods: this comparative cross section study was conducted on 140 pregnant women attending Al Azhar University Hospitals. Results: When looking at LUS thickness, the TAS group and the TVS group were significantly different. In terms of LUS grade, the TAS group and the TVS group did not differ significantly from one another. Conclusion: The obstetric features, hemoglobin levels, total leukocyte count, prothrombin time, and INR of the TAS and TVS groups were not significantly different from one another. On the other hand, we found that the TAS group measured LUS thickness significantly differently from the TVS group, which means that TAS might give a little more accurate reading of LUS thickness.
