The Darién Gap is commonly framed as an impenetrable void—a landscape defined exclusively by chaos, danger, and death. While its lethality is undeniable, this abstraction flattens the region into statistics, obscuring the deeply layered systems that actually govern mass movement. This thesis reframes the Gap by foregrounding the lived experiences of migrants and local populations, revealing a complex spatial economy where extreme exploitation by narco-paramilitaries coexists alongside profound adaptation, care, and mutual support. To understand these intersecting realities, the project shifts from passive representation to active countermapping through the physical methodology of layering, unlayering, and relayering. By forcing the translation of phenomenological experience (collage) into structural geographic data (drawing), personal testimonies are treated as forms of architectural writing. This approach refuses conventional empirical abstraction, instead allowing human narratives to function as spatial data. The resulting artifact exposes the hidden mechanics of the crossing, the segmentation of routes, the tiered commodification of survival, and the precise environmental voids where migrants are entirely abandoned to the landscape. From this spatial analysis emerges a series of architectural interventions designed not as prescriptive, top-down solutions, but as site-specific acts of recognition. Recognizing that any formal, visible infrastructure is structurally vulnerable to cartel capture, the project proposes a covert humanitarian corridor. By leveraging Indigenous spatial knowledge, distributed canopy mesh networks, hidden border caches, and culturally embedded practices such as Jagua-based information tattoos, the architecture operates strictly below the threshold of visibility. Ultimately, this work repositions architecture as a networked practice of care, rendering visible and extending the systems of shared humanity that already persist within the territory without reproducing the extractive logics that currently define it.
