The Possible Relation of the 3-KILOPARSEC Arm to Explosions in the Galactic Nucleus

Abstract

One- and two-dimensional hydrodynamical calculations have been carried out in order to simulate the effects of an energetic explosion in the center of the Galaxy. In both cases the galactic gravitational field, differential rotation, and radiative cooling were approximately simulated. The essential result is that a radially oscillating ring of cold gas is produced in galactic plane and that this oscillation persists for some time longer than the initial expansion time of the hot gas. The mean distance of this oscillating ring from the galactic center is dependent upon the explosion energy. In order to produce such a ring at the location of the 3-kpc arm, the explosion of a central mass of 4 x 108 M0 with a total explosion energy of 3 x 1058 ergs is required. Very little gas is left between the ring and the galactic center. These results are discussed with regard to their possible relevance to the observed 3-kpc arm.
