Why the study?
Do cholinergic agonists and cyclic GMP prevent ventricular fibrillation in dogs with healed myocardial infarctions during exercise-induced ischemia?
Population
17 mongrel dogs with healed myocardial infarctions subjected to a 2-min coronary occlusion during exercise
Comparison
Carbachol, 8-bromo cyclic GMP, or dibutyryl… vs Control state
Design
Preclinical
Key result
Carbachol prevented ventricular fibrillation in 78.6% of susceptible dogs during exercise and ischemia, and cyclic GMP analogs showed similar protective effects independent of heart rate.

Do cholinergic agonists and cyclic GMP prevent ventricular fibrillation in dogs with healed myocardial infarctions during exercise-induced ischemia?
Absolute Event Rate: 78.6% vs 0%
Cholinergic agonists and cyclic GMP can prevent ventricular fibrillation in susceptible animals independently of heart rate changes.
George E. Billman (1990) studied Susceptibility to ventricular fibrillation (n=17). Carbachol and cyclic GMP vs. Baseline/Control (no drug) was evaluated on Prevention of ventricular fibrillation. Carbachol prevented ventricular fibrillation in 78.6% of susceptible dogs during exercise and ischemia, and cyclic GMP analogs showed similar protective effects independent of heart rate.
