This paper presents a summary of the results of systematic and detailed biostratigraphical investigations within the lagoonal, tidal flat, perimarine and sand dune zones of north-west England and proposes the establishment of nine distinct periods of marine transgression. A relative sea-level curve is described and tentative correlations are made between periods of relative high sea-level and of climatic amelioration inferred from both marine and terrestrial evidence. The implications of these data for the development of coastal areas are briefly considered.
