The authors review and trends in international migration to Western Europe with a focus on flows to France Switzerland the United Kingdom and West Germany. They find that migration patterns can be explained by historical linguistic cultural and economic factors. In addition to these factors of immigration are shaped by internal political decisions (especially policies concerning foreign labor recruitment) and by economic political and demographic developments that take place outside Western Europe.
