Abstract Electrostrictive effects in the potassium tantalate niobate solid solution (K(Ta0.55Nb0.45)O3) have been investigated. The electrostrictive coefficients were determined by a strain gauge technique and by the measurement of hydrostatic pressure dependence of dielectric constant near the Curie temperature. The Q values obtained are Q11=9.5x10−2, Q12=-3.6x10−2 and Qh=2.3x10−2 m4C−2, which are almost the same as those of end-members, KTaO3 and KNbO3. The “constant QC rule” is maintained in this solid solution.
