Cats were artifically ventilated with 0, 0.26, 0.5 or 1.0 ppM O/sub 3/ for 2 to 6.5 hr. Functional measurements were repeated throughout the exposure period. R/sub L/ was increased with dose, albeit with wide variations. Atropine abolished the gradual increase in R/sub L/ with time in air only and 0.26 ppM groups but not in other groups. O/sub 3/ had a lesser effect on C/sub dyn/. Similarly, VC was generally unchanged. Volume-pressure relations were only slightly affected. Based on physiologic criteria, D/sub LCO/ was reduced in 0/3 control; 1/5 (after 288 min) in 0.26 ppM; 2/5 (after 47 and 129 min) in 0.5 ppM; and 4/9 (within 60 min) in 1 ppM group. FRC changes accompanied R/sub L/ changes, but to a lesser degree. Adjusted lung weights were unaffected.
