The article describes the trends and limits of dependence on imports and import substitution for certain types of economic activity due to the increase of interest to this topic in Russia. The author analyzes the geography of the dependence on imports. The concept of import substitution and industry classification by the criterion of their ability to import substitution is described. The potential of import substitution is described using example of engineering products and agrobusiness. The role of the state in promoting import substitution is shown.
