Prednisone and azathioprine for a minimum of 8 months (administered to 15 patients with myocardial gallium-67 uptake).

Patients with idiopathic congestive cardiomyopathy without gallium-67 uptake (untreated), and non-responders within the treated group.

Outcome
Clinical improvement, resolution of myocardial gallium-67 uptake, change in ejection fraction, and mortality.

Gallium-67 myocardial scintigraphy may help identify a subset of patients with idiopathic congestive cardiomyopathy who respond favorably to immunosuppressive therapy.
