A simple procedure for generating diagonal dominance in certain linear systems is presented, and the iterative solution of the transformed systems is discussed. The method is presented for systems encountered in the numerical solution of Fredholm equations of the first kind with singular kernels, and for systems arising in the interpolation of surfaces by certain sets of radial functions. In the second case the method provides new sets of basis functions generalizing in some sense the univariate B-splines.
