Abstract Perhaps the most significant dimension of the American Accounting Association (AAA) is its consistent focus on improving quality in the accounting education process. This common purpose has served as the foundation for much of the organization's historical effectiveness. Equally important, the pursuit of educational excellence in accounting should continue as the most important priority for this organization and for future generations of educators as well. This paper is written to offer insights into past and present efforts that are reflective of the contributions of the AAA to the accounting education process. As a practical matter, the past 20 years, from 1965 to 1984, serve as the frame of reference. Specifically, attention is directed both to the Association's activities in an organizational context and to the functional responsibilities of the Director of Education, an educational catalyst in this multi-faceted environment. This paper hopefully will serve as an information base for members who desire to obtain added perspective about the Association's potential for innovation in accounting education.
