Abstract At a conference on information systems in accounting education sponsored by Ernst & Whinney at The Ohio State University in 1984, presenters and discussants agreed on one essential topic for inclusion in the accounting information systems course: that students must have an opportunity to design an accounting system to prepare them for applying their technical knowledge in accounting practice. In spite of acknowledged difficulties and alternative techniques for implementing systems projects in the course, there was agreement that designing/developing at least a portion of an accounting system was the most important part of the course. This perspective was deemed appropriate for all accounting students, regardless of the focus of their careers.
