The new shrimpgoby, Tomiyamichthys oriens sp. nov ., is described based on two specimens collected off Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia. The new species is most similar to the recently described Japanese species T. hyacinthinus , both species being distinguished from all other species of Tomiyamichthys by having nine segmented dorsal- and anal-fin rays and two elongated filaments (second and third spines) in the first dorsal fin of males. The new species differs from T. hyacinthinus in several meristic characters (including numbers of pectoral- and caudal-fin rays, longitudinal scales, and gill rakers), as well as coloration. In addition, the morphological differences were supported by mitochondrial COI analyses, which demonstrated clear genetic differentiation (divergence of 3.1%) from T. hyacinthinus .
