A 20m x 20m strip, map and sample excavation area was investigated on the eastern edge of the Phase 2 area at the Chalk End quarry site, prior to localised mineral extraction. Previous geophysical survey and trial-trench evaluation across the Phase 2 quarry area, recorded the extensive remains of Late Iron Age to Roman land use, comprising possible occupation enclosures, field systems and associated features such as watering-holes. No archaeological remains were encountered within the SMS excavation area. It is therefore established that archaeological land use remains identified by the preceding evaluation and geophysical survey elsewhere in Phase 2 do not extend here.
