Structured PICO

Does the use of a pregnancy modifier reduce inconsistency among practitioners assigning the ASA Physical Status Classification to parturients?

P
Population
Practitioners rating pregnant patients (parturients)
I
Intervention
Use of a modifier, G (for gravid), in the ASA Physical Status Classification
C
Comparator
Standard ASA Physical Status Classification without a modifier
O
Outcome
Inconsistency or discrepancy among practitioners in assigning the ASA Physical Status Classification

The addition of a 'G' (gravid) modifier to the ASA Physical Status Classification reduces inconsistency among practitioners when evaluating pregnant patients.

Abstract

In Brief In this study, we sought to determine whether there is a significant discrepancy among a group of practitioners when rating pregnant patients using the ASA Physical Status Classification and whether this discrepancy could be resolved with the addition of a modifier for pregnancy. Our results indicate that significant discrepancy occurs and that it is reduced with the use of the modifier, especially when referring to the healthy parturient. IMPLICATIONS: The current ASA Physical Status Classification does not consistently address the physiological changes of pregnancy. The use of a modifier, G (for gravid), reduces inconsistency in assigning the ASA Physical Status Classification.
