Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technological force that is reshaping various aspects of human life, including the nature of social relationships. The increasing integration of AI in communication platforms, social media, digital assistants, and conversational agents has significantly influenced the way individuals interact, communicate, and maintain relationships. This study examines the sociological implications of artificial intelligence on social relationships by analysing both its positive and negative impacts. The paper reviews existing scholarly literature and applies sociological perspectives such as functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and network society theory to understand how AI-mediated interactions influence social structures and interpersonal behaviour. The analysis highlights that AI technologies contribute positively by improving communication efficiency, strengthening long-distance relationships, enhancing social inclusion for people with disabilities, and providing emotional support through digital platforms. However, the study also identifies several challenges associated with AI use, including reduced face-to-face interaction, emotional dependency on AI systems, privacy concerns, artificial intimacy, and the potential erosion of authentic human communication. The paper further discusses measures to promote healthy social relationships in the AI era through responsible technology use, ethical AI design, digital literacy, and stronger community engagement. The study concludes that while AI offers significant opportunities for social connectivity, careful governance and ethical practices are necessary to ensure that technological advancement strengthens rather than weakens human relationships.
