The Luminous Library: A Reading System for Books That Compute

Five wings. Twenty-one titles. One reading system. For five hundred years a book has been a fixed object that a reader moves through. The author computes — works out the argument, runs the numbers, tries the practice — and then flattens all of it into prose, and the reader receives the residue. Every workbook ever printed is an apology for this: the blank lines, the tear-out worksheet, the appendix of tables, each one the author saying I could not run this for you, so here is a place to run it yourself, badly, in pencil. The Luminous Library is the specification for books that compute. It sets out the Doctrine of the Instrument — five rules for placing a working application inside a book without the book ceasing to be one — and demonstrates three instruments: The Pace (four in, six out; the nervous system's own dial), The Parts Table (Internal Family Systems, and it remembers), and The Tithe (ten percent, annually, forever). It defines the anatomy of a book as twelve page kinds, of which eleven are inherited from existing editorial practice and exactly one is new: the Instrument, an application set as a page kind — framed, captioned, foliated, printable. One kind is new and eleven are inherited. That ratio is the argument: the Library did not need a new design language to hold software, it needed one new page. The five wings — Commerce, Partnership, The Body, The Mind, The Practice — hold twenty-one titles. Four are fully set and openable: Luminous Prosperity Dance, Evolutionary Intelligence, Luminous Partnerships, and High Frequency Wellness. Each opens in its own register, carries its own sources, and shares no photograph with any other.
