William B. Kannel, MD (1923-2011), was emeritus professor of medicine and public health at Boston University School of Medicine and former director of the Framingham Heart Study from 1966 to 1979. He joined the Framingham Heart Study in 1950 and served as principal investigator from 1979 to 1987. He coined the term 'risk factor' in a 1961 publication and led research on cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, lipids, and smoking.
