This study focuses on the capabilities of 5G and the technology trends shaping the future beyond 5G. It assesses the evolving features of wireless communication systems along with next-generation systems' technologies, applications, issues, and possibilities. A structured literature review covering the years 2000-2024, as well as a conceptual analysis on future networks and their underpinning technologies are carried out. It is observed that 5G improves speed, latency, and capacity, but the future lies in intelligent hyper-connected networks with AI, terahertz frequencies, and integrated sensing and communications (isac). The evolution of wireless communication systems permeates every facet of life and this study provides insight on the direction of its innovations.
