After the final departure of British colonial power from India in 1947, Dhaka as the provincial capital experienced many changes and challenges that required the active attention of the central and local governments, citizens, planners and policy makers about its physical expansion, infrastructural settings, urban development and natural growth. As one of the most important urban agencies and autonomous organizations in East Pakistan, the Dhaka Improvement Trust (DIT) was empowered with various functions and responsibilities for providing comprehensive urban infrastructures, civic services and amenities and other facilities for the inhabitancies of Dhaka City. The Board of Trustees of the Dhaka Improvement Trust was equipped with special powers including an authority to exercise financial authority for collecting money to achieve the objectives of the organization. The study of the urbanization of Dhaka city and its urban history is not possible without the examination of the financial conditions and sources of finance of Dhaka Improvement during the Pakistan period. This study is about managing financial sources especially the external finances which were dedicated to the infrastructural reconstitution and urban development of Dhaka City. This article aims to analyse the problems and prospects of the External Financial sources of the Dhaka Improvement Trust in the City Development of Dhaka from 1956-1971.
