In memoriam of Prof. Javier Manterola (1936-2024), whose vision and contributions shaped many of the bridges discussed in this work. In urban settings, bridges are not only vital mobility infrastructure but also extensions of public space. As cities evolve, integrating pedestrian areas into road bridges has become increasingly relevant—not only functionally, but as a means to enhance the urban continuity. While full separation—via independent pedestrian and vehicular bridges—is often pursued, a single, well-designed structure can achieve comparable results. When pedestrian needs are thoughtfully addressed within a shared system, integration supports comfort and safety without requiring a separate footbridge. Through selected projects by the CFC design firm, this study examines structural and spatial approaches that balance technical efficiency with pedestrian experience and urban integration.
