Laili-Majnu by Daulat Ujir Bahram Khan is a unique creation in medieval Bengali romance poetry. In terms of readership, the poem is equally appreciated not only in Middle Ages but also in modern era. Based on Arabian folklore, the main theme of the poem is the eternal love story of Laili and Majnu. Majnu, madly in love with Laili, has taken on the guise of a lunatic. Laili, too, has actively contributed to the fulfilment of their love. Yet, their love remained unrealised due to the constraints imposed by social norms, familial expectations, and rigid moral codes. The anguish of these two unfulfilled hearts has infused the desert landscape with a profound sense of sorrow. This agony has transcended the barren wilderness of the desert to echo across lands and through the passage of time. Laili-Majnu pair is unique as a love analogy. Laili-Majnu's unrequited love is not in union, but in separation. Their lives have been through unfulfilment, wailing and lamentation for love. The body is perishable, the soul is imperishable; So is the love story of Laili-Majnu. ‘A corpse of love doesnot sink in water’ is more applicable in the case of Laili-Majnu. The love character of the poem has been explained in the article.
