Motivation: 3T MRI preferred for neuroimaging but is contraindicated for DBS patients due to tissue heating risks. This study aims to enable safer MRI by minimizing RF currents in DBS electrodes while maintaining effective B1+ fields. Goal(s): To construct and assess a 16-channel double-row pTx coil for reducing electrode current and improving B1+-homogeneity in DBS patients, comparing experimental and simulation results. Approach: The coil was tested on 3T scanner with a DBS electrode phantom. FDTD simulations were conducted and regularised MLS shimming was used to optimise B1+ fields. Results: Current regularised B1+ shimming achieved uniform B1+ with greatly reduced tip current, consistent with simulation. Impact: This study provides the first experimental evidence that a double-row pTx coil can defeat RF currents on DBS electrodes while maintaining homogeneous B1+ at 3T. This technology could enable safer and more effective MRI for this patient group.
