Governmental adoptions of open sources are driven by key factors, including system interoperability, cost-efficiency, vendor lock-in avoidance, redundancy reduction, and innovation stimulation 1,2,3. A notable case is the Taipei City Dashboard Open-Source Initiative, which offers insights into open innovation in the context of an Asian city. Our study builds on existing theories to explore monetary incentives, skills development, enjoyment, and social influence impacting participation, satisfaction, and contribution quality. Our preliminary findings show that prizes and enjoyment increase the odds of contribution quality while the skill and development motive is associated with satisfaction. Preliminary findings reveal that prizes and enjoyment enhance contribution quality, while skills development relates to satisfaction levels. We derive three lessons: emphasizing substantial award prizes for quality contributions, infusing fun into hackathons for community-building, and aligning tasks with participants' skills to enhance satisfaction.
