This paper explored the use of artificial intelligence chatbots in creative English writing to examine how critically students can evaluate and utilize the outcomes and what students can learn through this process in a general elective course at a 4-year university. In anticipation of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, this study proposes five steps to appropriately utilize ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence chatbot, as an auxiliary tool for learning.Students used ChatGPT in their English writing based on these steps. The teaching method was applied to students taking two general elective courses, "Screen English" and "Exploration of English Literature," and the results showed that students actively received assistance from ChatGPT in modifying their writing to align with their thoughts and meanings, rather than accepting the modified text directly. At the beginning of the semester, students lacked ethical awareness regarding using artificial intelligence platforms. However, they have benefited from cultivating critical thinking skills through selection and judgment.Through implementing this teaching method, it became apparent that there is a need to educate students on developing critical thinking skills, information verification abilities, and awareness of plagiarism while actively utilizing artificial intelligence chatbots within these categories.ChatGPT is a handy tool for learning foreign languages and practicing writing. However, it is crucial to be mindful that, more than ever, the user should not lose their agency during the process.
