Abstract This paper describes an approach to developing graphical modeling methods. An array of methods currently exist: IDEF, Data Flow Diagrams, Entity-Relationship Diagrams, etc. Most, however, have not been systematically designed (i.e., engineered). Also, all have gaps in what they describe about a given system. The design approach described here offers a method by which the designer can systematically develop a graphical modeling method tailored to his particular needs.
