This paper describes the procedure for evaluating the economic feasibility of replacing electromechanical relay protection in power plants with microprocessor protection. The procedure is applied on the example of the "Gazivode" hydroelectric power plant (HPP), where it was shown that the entire investment can be repaid in about 2.5 years. This can be achieved based on the reduction of costs of operation and maintenance, overhaul and unsupplied electricity for the case of microprocessor protection compared to the case of electromechanical protection.
