The study was carried out within the framework of the cognitive field of linguistics and is devoted to the description of the functional potential of metaphor in artistic discourse. It is noted that metaphor is a key element of artistic discourse and in a synthesized form represents all its main characteristics. The paper pays attention to the typology of the functions of metaphor in D. Granin's novel “My Lieutenant”, highlights the emotionally expressive, evaluative, ethical, characterizing, aesthetic, nominative functions, the function of cultural coding. The world-modeling function of metaphor is recognized as the main one. The purpose of the study is to describe the functional potential of metaphorical transfer and highlight cognitive metaphorical models that demonstrate the implementation of the world-modeling function of metaphor in D. Granin’s novel “My Lieutenant”. The object of the study is metaphorical units in D. Granin's novel. The authors rely on the theory of imagery, the postulates of which are presented in the works of scholars of Tomsk Linguistic School (O.I. Blinova, E.A. Yurina), and consider figurative units of lexical and syntactic levels that have semantic ambiguity and metaphorical inner form, realizing their figurative potential in context. The degree of determinacy of the metaphor by the contextual environment determined the gradation of figurative units: linguistic – artistic – individual and authorial. The methods of creating a metaphorical transfer when creating an author's metaphorical unit, characteristic of D. Granin's worldview, are described: the oxymoron technique, which consists in combining opposite/antonymous objects in the process of metaphorization; objectification of reality by combining the spheres of the abstract and objective world, and others. As a result, the recipient becomes involved in the cognitive process of decoding information. It is noted that the metaphorical model verbalized in the auПак thor's figurative unit, although often occasional, is nevertheless built according to standard schemes and contains the key to decoding. The paper highlights productive metaphorical models involved in the formation of the space of the work and the image of the main character. The main principle, which is the basis of the primary cognitive models in D. Granin's novel, the principle of anthropocentrism, is determined. As a result of the study of the world–modeling function of figurative units, three cognitive models are distinguished: something – a person (a living being), a living being – a living being, a person (a living being) – something, their characteristics, composition are given, productivity and features of the implementation of each model in the author's context are described. As a result of the study, it is concluded that when creating metaphorical models, D. Granin mainly refers to universal images familiar to native speakers of any language and culture, and figurative units that verbalize key metaphorical models participate in characterizing key areas of life: man, nature, space, war, material world, etc.
