Abstract: Labor unions started in the anti-coup movement in Myanmar’s 2021 revolution through mobilizing citizens and organizing strikes against the military coup. This article delves into the intricate examination of gender dynamics and decision-making processes within female labor union leadership during social movements resisting the Myanmar coup. The study seeks to unravel the influence of gender norms and societal expectations on the roles and actions of women in labor unions. Utilizing qualitative research methods, including interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders, this study draws on Marxist feminism to analyze emerging themes and patterns in the context of social movements and unionization in leadership. This comprehensive framework offers a deeper understanding of the distinctive experiences and opportunities for women in a landscape where gender norms may influence power dynamics and decision-making processes. The findings reveal the significant contributions of female labor union leaders for advancing democratic progress and peacebuilding efforts in postcoup Myanmar. This study seeks to offer actionable knowledge on the challenges these women encounter and the potential for cultivating more inclusive and effective leadership strategies. By highlighting these dynamics, this article contributes to the broader understanding of gender roles in social and political movements.
