A summary of the broadscale tropical circulation from May to October 1992 in the area of analysis responsibility of the Darwin Regional/Specialised Meteorological Centre – that is from 70°E to the date-line – is presented. Mature El Niño conditions were apparent during the previous austral summer. Early in the summary period, most indicators showed that El Niño began to weaken but did not fully dissipate. Weak warm conditions lingered and were generally re-intensifying at the end of the period. The northern hemisphere summer monsoon produced mostly near-normal rainfall totals. Five active phases of the intraseasonal oscillation were noted, with an average periodicity at about 40 days. More than the mean number of tropical cyclones developed during the period.
