On the fiftieth anniversary of Humanity & Society , I reflect on the compatibility of humanist sociology and the academy as an institution. While public-facing work in academia continues to be acknowledged and, at least in some places, celebrated, it nonetheless places limits on its practitioners. In this article, I focus on these limitations and how being a scholar-activist is not compatible with being an activist-scholar.
