Purpose This study aims to propose a research setting criticality (RSC) framework, providing an operational definition and key propositions to guide impactful research design. Design/methodology/approach Literature review and field interviews refined RSC’s functions, mapped perceived cause-and-effect relationships and generated key propositions for an overarching framework. Findings RSC comprises problem statement analysis, theoretical citation and quantitative modeling, which collectively enhance research credibility, academic impact and practical relevance. Its development is shaped by organizational and individual antecedents, with journal standards as boundary conditions. Practical implications The RSC framework provides an effective approach to high-quality research aligned with institutional and industry needs, guiding stakeholders to design studies and apply findings in a scientifically informed manner. Originality/value By specifying components, antecedents, outcomes and boundary conditions, RSC extends existing research quality models, providing a systematic foundation for enhancing scientific and practical contributions.
