Soil moisture decline was at an annual rate of 38 l/m3 associated with increasing avocado production across the Green Gold Belt (GGB). Nearly 50% of the region is in vulnerable areas at high risk of soil moisture decline. These findings suggest that, with the ongoing increase in global demand for avocados, temperate mountain forests and local communities in the GGB region may face adverse hydrological issues in the near future.
