Education is a key strategy in disaster preparedness and response. The more we learn about disasters, physiological and mental health “injuries,” the greater the chance for positive health outcomes. Nurses need to be competent and confident in disaster-related skills. Disaster events affect all people, to some degree, both physically and mentally. Nurses and nurse leaders need to take care of themselves so that they can effectively care for others.
