Ethiopia’s first confirmed Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak, which began on Nov 14, 2025, was declared by WHO to be over on Jan 26, 2026. The outbreak saw 14 confirmed cases, nine deaths, and five recoveries, with 857 contacts traced. In addition to MDV declines, mpox cases have declined sharply across Africa, with weekly cases down about 90%, causing the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to announce that mpox was no longer a public health emergency of continental concern on Jan 22, 2026.
