In this paper, a comprehensive state-of-the-art review on types, current modelling, analysis, and design trends of arch, continuous girder, cable stayed, suspension, and steel truss bridge types prone to progressive collapse is presented. Moreover, the effect of different parameters and respective damage mitigation techniques are also delineated based on the findings of compiled case-study reports, and numerical investigations. Finally, from the reviewed literatures, specific knowledge gaps, future bridge engineering practice implications, and unforeseen future study areas are outlined. • The paper reviews disproportionate collapse types for various bridge structures. • In this paper, both traditional and new progressive collapse analysis and design methods are discussed. • Case studies reports, and numerical study results on progressive collapse of different types of bridges are all discussed. • Current and future implications of bridge structures under progressive collapse are presented.
