With the rise of application industries such as aerospace, wind power generation, and ship propulsion in recent years, the dependability requirements of motor systems have become increasingly stringent. The normal operation of each functional unit in the motor system is necessary for high reliability. Therefore, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of recent research on high-reliability machine systems and summarizes it from the standpoint of redundancy design. The methods to improve the reliability of the machine system are summarized as motor redundancy, winding redundancy, excitation redundancy, drive redundancy, and diagnosis redundancy in this paper. Subsequently, extensive research is conducted on the most recent advancements in machine concepts that exhibit the capacity for exceptional reliability. In addition, this study thoroughly examines and compares the operational principles, benefits, and limitations, as well as prospective developments of various topologies.
