Archaeological Evaluation by Trial Trenching at Breck, Derbyshire

This report describes the second phase in an ongoing programme of trial trenching on land at Breck, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The area is subject to an application for planning permission for open-cast coal extraction by Fitzwise Limited. Geophysical Surveys of Bradford undertook a detailed survey at a number of locations within the application area, and the trenching described in this report covered two of those areas. of This Phase of trenching was carried out within two fields currently occupied by pasture. It is anticipated that further trial trenching will be carried out within arable fields after the crops have been harvested in August September 1997. One trench was excavated on land immediately to the north of White Lodge, and the other trench was excavated further up hill, to the west of Breck Lane. The trenches were excavated in order to investigate linear features identified during the geophysical survey. No datable artefacts were recovered during this consequently precise dating of the features phase of the trial trenching, and encountered was not possible. features located during the evaluation are not worthy of preservation in situ.
