After initial labials the loss of w, if not IE, must certainly have occurred early in all the dialects, perhaps as a result of assimilation The words in 1.01-3 may come from a base *pewā - ‘swell, blow, puff’. Many other examples could be given; cf. Persson, Beitr. 241 ff.
