An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at the former works site, Elm Road, off Hylton Road, Worcester (NGR SO 8400 5525). It was commissioned by Green Self Storage and Transwipers, in association with the demolition of the existing buildings and construction of two new storage buildings. Planning permission has been granted subject to a programme of archaeological works. Three trenches, amounting to approximately 80m in area, were excavated over the site. The location of the trenches is indicated in Figure 2. The trenches were laid out in accordance with the curator's specification, across the former works building on approximately east to west orientations. The trenches revealed the foundations and floor surfaces of a later 19 th century Tannery, which was converted into the Sausage Skin Factory in the early 20 th century, with later truncations from the foundations and services of the recently demolished garage works. There was no evidence of any earlier finds, features or structures predating the later 19 th century, or of any earlier occupation of the site, nor was there was any relict topsoil or subsoil profile surviving. The natural mudstone was identified directly below the modern floor slab and foundation layers. It was generally fairly flat, at c 21.21m AOD, although was noted to slope down within the east end of Trench 1. It is therefore considered that the natural slope was cut into when this part of the site was levelled and terraced in the 20 th century, for the Sausage Skin Factory, which would have removed any evidence of earlier activity.
