A 1,914sq m excavation area (Area 1) was positioned to investigate the vicinity of the Roman pits in the Phase 1a development area, identified by preceding evaluation trenches. The construction contractor's excavation of a 2.45m long cable trench located to the north west of the excavation area was subsequently subject to a watching brief. A 1,914sq m excavation area (Area 1) was positioned to investigate the vicinity of the Roman pits in the Phase 1a development area. A number of parallel and regularly-spaced ditches were interpreted to define agricultural fields or enclosures. One land entity contained a number of rubbish pits and possible postholes. Additional pits and ditches were identified during the watching brief on a cable trench located to the north of the excavation area. These remains probably constituted part of a mid/late Roman farmstead located alongside the London to Colchester road.
