Comprehensive Organic Chemistry Experiments (COCE) serve as a crucial compulsory course for undergraduate chemistry majors. The course is designed to bridge multidisciplinary theoretical knowledge with practical applications while fostering students’ core competencies in organic small molecule research and production. To tackle the shortcomings of traditional COCE teaching in domestic universities, this study conducted a teaching reform during the academic period 2023–2024 academic period. A project-based teaching model was put forward with a case study centered on “Design, Synthesis, and Biological Evaluation of Potential SDH Inhibitors”. The implementation of this program placed a significant emphasis on process evaluation and student engagement. Teaching effectiveness was assessed by integrating the results with the survey data. In comparison to traditional teaching methods, this model demonstrates stronger coherence and permeability in the experimental content. It can effectively ignite students’ motivation for independent learning and enhance the quality of teaching.
