To be a Vishwa Guru is to embody the essence of a teacher to the world, not merely through words, but through actions thatinspire global harmony and advancement.” – Swami Vivekananda. India’s trajectory over 78 years of independence, focusing on its aspirations to be recognised as a “Vishwa Guru” or “World Teacher.” Since gaining independence in 1947, India has evolved from a newly sovereign state to a significant global player, with its journey reflecting a blend of historical, cultural, economic, and geopolitical elements. Initially, India’s post-independence focus was on socio-economic development. Efforts to industrialize, reform land ownership, and expand education were foundational to its progress. As India navigated the Cold War, it maintained a non- aligned stance, gradually shifting towards a more prominent global role underpinned by its democratic and secular values. A significant aspect of India’s quest to be a Vishwa Guru is its cultural revival. The international acclaim of yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian cinema exemplifies the global reach of Indian traditions. The International Day of Yoga, celebrated worldwide, reflects India’s commitment to promoting its cultural and spiritual heritage. Economic liberalisation in the 1990s marked a pivotal change, transforming India into one of the world’s largest economies. Its achievements in technology and space exploration, such as the Mars Orbiter Mission, highlight its growing influence in global science and innovation. India’s geopolitical strategy, involving active participation in forums like BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) and the G20, and forming strategic alliances, underscores its expanding global presence. Despite challenges like socio-economic disparities and regional conflicts, India’s focus on innovation, cultural diplomacy, and sustainable development continues to enhance its role as a global leader. The primary focus of this study was, that India’s journey over 78 years reveals its enduring quest to be a Vishwa Guru. The interplay of its rich heritage, economic strides, technological achievements, and strategic engagements underscores its evolving role as a guiding force on the global stage.
