ended the federal constitutional right to abortion in the United States. As a result, 12 states now ban abortion in nearly all circumstances and several states restrict abortion access to early gestational limits. This article considers how abortion bans and restrictions have influenced maternal morbidity and mortality, sentinel indicators of our nation's health. This article discusses the availability of routinely collected U.S. data for studying abortion bans and restrictions on maternal morbidity and mortality, study design and context considerations for estimating consequences of abortion bans and restrictions, and recommendations about how to improve data collection and dissemination.
