Virtual field trips using 360° video technology offer an engaging and accessible complement to traditional field-based learning in ecology. We developed Habitat Explorer, a framework for creating virtual field experiences using smartphone-accessible 360° videos from six habitats across three continents. Our mobile-first approach overcomes logistical and financial barriers associated with more expensive virtual reality resources while maintaining educational impact through immersive experiences. In alignment with the Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4DEE) framework’s emphasis on observation study of the natural world, students use personal smartphones to view footage from diverse global locations, enabling comparative analysis of similar habitats worldwide. We provide a reproducible workflow for educators to create their own virtual field experiences, complete with step-by-step guides and technical considerations for classroom integration. This flexible resource supports both in-person and online classes while also serving as a low-cost tool for informal community-based learning.
