This article presents the actual state of solving the problem of harmonious physical development of schoolchildren as one of the leading tasks of physical education at school. The problem is considered from the perspective of the graduates' fitness for military service. The state of development of skeletal muscles, insufficient development of respiratory muscles, and disproportionality of physical development, which are indicators that are corrected by means of physical education in the school process, are critically inconsistent with the average standards. The dependence of physical fitness indicators on physical development indicators is studied.
