This study examines the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered fake news on Nigerian society, with particular attention to its political, social, and economic consequences. The research explores how the increasing use of AI technologies in media production and information dissemination has contributed to the rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation within Nigeria’s digital media environment. Through a review of related literature and relevant case studies, the study identifies the vulnerability of the Nigerian media landscape to AI-generated fake news, especially through social media platforms where misinformation spreads quickly with minimal regulation. The findings reveal that AI-powered fake news negatively affects political stability by influencing public opinion and electoral processes, weakens social cohesion through the spread of false narratives and conflict-driven content, and disrupts economic activities by creating uncertainty and mistrust. The study also highlights the declining level of public trust in media institutions as fake news becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from factual information. To address these challenges, the research recommends the establishment of stronger regulatory policies, the use of advanced technologies for fake news detection, and increased media literacy education among citizens. The study concludes that combating AI-driven misinformation requires collaborative efforts from policymakers, media organizations, technology companies, and the public in order to strengthen societal resilience and preserve the integrity of information in Nigeria’s digital age.
