The results of a study of success and failure in advanced manufacturing technology are reported. The author argues that success comes in two stages: technical success and business success (realization of the full benefits). The research found that technical success is not sufficient for the realization of business success. The study also found that outright failure was rare; but that companies often failed to achieve all the benefits. It concluded that the full benefits of advanced manufacturing technology are achievable, but many companies have yet to achieve them.
